SC Johnson Sucks Customer Reviews and Feedback

From Everything.Sucks

S. C. Johnson & Son, Inc. (commonly referred to as S. C. Johnson) is an American multinational privately held manufacturer of household cleaning supplies and other consumer chemicals based in Racine, Wisconsin. In 2017, S. C. Johnson employed approximately 13,000 people and had estimated sales of $10 billion. The company is owned by the Johnson family. H. Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO since 2004, is the fifth generation of the Johnson family to lead the company.

A current employee says details a toxic environment saying, "Hostile environment at [SC Johnson]. Many associates complained to HR only to experience retaliation from management and only left with a choice to leave. During Black Lives Matter senior management disregarded associates views to be involve/help and instead experienced racial insensitivity. Again HR did not hold management accountable."

A former IT manager says, "To work in IT sucks there - with many transformations that the IT organization [at SC Johnson] went through in the last 5-6 years, the employee's are heavily overworked and training is not guaranteed, constant finger-pointing and power fights in leadership - the folks in the leadership levels have no trust from the levels below - they are bleeding a lot of talent in the last 6 month and I feel bad for the folks that have to fight the mess as leadership rather thinks some consultant can easily solve it. Investment in folks is super hard to get approved by senior leadership - In-fighting inside the towers in the IT world makes every simple thing twice as hard."

Current Employee - Production says

"Total compensation increases of 1% per year since Great Recession. Leadership team no longer acknowledges low moral. No incentives to perform. Company is Striving to purge everyone who stays long enough to vest. The tone is set so that you feel like the place is one payment from bankruptcy/ the future looks dire yet the Johnson family's wealth has exploded during and after the Great Recession. Meanwhile People are being shamed into working forced weekends while others are burning Jetfuel to stage photo ops with pop bottles."

Former Employee - Charlotte Office says

"The Charlotte office has a horrible culture and toxic work environment with lots of finger pointing and "alliances", you don't know who you can trust. Unattainable goals are set - setting the team up for failure."

Former Employee - Sales and Marketing says

"Politics, Corrupt, Vague in commission structure, wants you to work hard and make money for them and then take it from the reps"

Current Employee - Associate Manager says

"Sr. Directors completely micromanage employees. No flexibility or ability to work from home. Very defeated work force. Every year it's low profits, poor raises and profit sharing."

Former Employee - Senior Director says

"Leadership is not held accountable to results or culture aspirations"

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee says

"In my opinion one of the public faces of the company is disrespectful and consistently bullies and belittles her team and creates an extremely toxic work environment. Public shaming and manipulation are the norm, which leads to a team that operates under the fear of retaliation. Other departments within the organization have a positive reputation, but this one is dysfunctional under current leadership. Very unfortunate because the team is strong."

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee says

"Sorry to hear this. We want everyone to feel supported by their HR team and that the company provides the tools needed to succeed. We appreciate the feedback."

says

"Leadership that bullies employees (Ex Kraft employees) Lack of work life balance Inability to set a strategy and then work toward achieving it Lack of product innovation"

Research Director (Former Employee) says

"I discovered that they had contacting my current manager - without permission - before I even interviewed. They then brought up a question from this discussion in interview (based on a false statement my previous manager had made). Very unethicalThank you for sharing your feedback. We have reviewed these details internally with our recruiting teams and HR partners and have been unable to identify a situation where this may have happened. Please know that reaching out to current employers or managers without an applicant or employee’s permission is not part of our process. If you wish to discuss the issue further, we would welcome any additional details or feedback to scjhr@scj.com."

Sr. Analyst (Former Employee) says

"They make promises that aren't kept. I believe in the company as a whole but our department is extremely toxic with micromanaging leadership and watchful employees. There is zero work life balance and the work from home policy is a farce. You should drive into the office in a snowstorm v. working from home. No trust in employees. I know not all departments are like this and some are wonderful. It's the luck of the draw. Beware!!"

Production Operative (Former Employee) says

"There is a high turn over of staff, family members are given priority of hours, overtime and not having to work as hard as other employees. Some of the line runners are amazing and will treat you with respect, some are awful. Be prepared to cut open plastic cartons and pour copious amount of their products Soap Swarfega etc down their drains ?! Because a container is squashed or there are surplus to the order, huge amount of environmental waste and plastics :( I left after 3 months as only decent staff left, and you could be on a line for 3 shifts solid getting a headache from Swarfega fumes while other staff related to office staff would be on a easy line or stood chatting for hours? No proper rotation , 95% staff under 35 years oldLose weight build arm strength and resilienceHaving to remove boiler suit boots etc in 10 min break"

Technician II (Current Employee) says

"Bay City Site management is a JOKE! They have no backbone and treat their employees terribly. Management has no respect for the employees who work their tails off to keep the place afloat and get no support or recognition. The term "family company" only pertains to the owners who are completely out of the picture. The pay is good, but not enough to compensate for the stress that they put their employees through both mentally and physically.Profit sharingTreat their employees terrible"

Line Assembler (Former Employee) says

"Need to do a lot better than what they are doing as far as keeping machine working and a little better on attitudes would be perfect to keep working.."

Analyst (Current Employee) says

"I have fitted into all the companies I have worked in except for this one. This is mainly due to being treated more like a child than the adult I am. The culture is very different to anywhere else I have ever worked.Early FridayWorkload extreme and salary too low."

Operator (Former Employee) says

"It's all about who you know and if you don't other employees and managers are out to get your job. Fellow employees will will keep a written journal of everything you do to report to the manager."

Senior Analyst (Current Employee) says

"In recent years they have really gone downhill. It now feels like you are in the playground at school. Everyone is extremely overworked and they rely too heavily on certain individuals putting them under a lot of stress. They need to equal out the workload and stop letting certain individuals manipulate things to their own advantage. The young ones rule the roost.Subsidised canteen, profit share, gymWorkload, pressure, stressful"

Executive (Current Employee) says

"I cannot say anything positive or encouraging about my work experience. Aside from the two recent RIFs (reduction in force), we have a mass exodus underway. Managers are not bonus eligible.Discounted WindexMicro-managing, generally dysfunctional"

Manager (Current Employee) says

"Poor management and lack of focus, at least in my area of the company. Mean and rude clique environment. Hard for new people to fit in. And by “new” I mean less than 10 years with company!!"

Senior Associate (Current Employee) says

"Certain groups of the company believe in intimidation and silencing those that leadership has targeted as someone that they do not personally like. Any sort of development or coaching that you attempted to receive early in your career at this company, is quickly removed once this stigma is placed on your name. Try to stay in the leadership's good graces, otherwise you are shunned and pushed to the side until you voluntarily leave."

Manager (Current Employee) says

"Management is run like a dictatorship. It not interested in employees thoughts, only constant change in goals and processes weekly, driven top down. No work life balance. Vacation time is spent working to keep up with deliverables. Promotions are cherry picked for under-performers to stop the bleed of talent leaving the company as they know under-performers will not leave and continue to be overworked. Constant push to move jobs to Chicago from Racine to source managements former co-workers is on-going creating a lot of disruption. Multiple locations and job functions spread across 4 different locations in Racine and Chicago creates inefficiencies. A lot of $ being spent on new buildings and renovations without a systemic outline of which roles will fill those new locations.Benefits, Holiday Shutdown, PensionManagement, Work Life Balance, Promotions"

Payroll Analyst (Former Employee) says

"Overall, a pretty decent company. Very difficult to get into; must know someone on the inside. Company culture and atmosphere was relaxed."

Merchandiser (Former Employee) says

"they do not give the payslip of their employee,we don't know if the salary that we're received are right or not we didn't see what they deducted from us...the salary or rate are too small and below minimum rate(315.00/day)and we do even the responsibilities of our coordinator...most agency or company here in the phillipine are like these. their cut even the transpo. allowance.transportation allowanceonly 8hrs"

Facility Manager Western Zone (Current Employee) says

"pas de management aux RH société à éviter licenciements en masse dans tous les services très mauvaise ambiance charge de travail énorme"

manufacturing 3 processor (Current Employee) says

"a typical day is when system failer occurred, the bulk spills allover the vessels and then i have to press the emergency stop button and then after that i have to clean the mess taking some pictures filling the incident report, preparing the one point lesson what i have learnt is to apply all the safety measures to apply whenever such an indecent happens. the management were very supportive and my co-workers the hardest part of the job is when we haven't received the raw materials and components from our customers while we have some large orders from our system the most enjoyable part of the job is when i have all the ingredients as per orders and when am doing the stock counts and everything balance on the systemprofit sharing & incentivesovertime & night shift"

Warehouse Technician (Current Employee) says

"Do your research before you take the job they are offering you. Watch what you say around the people around you and never take your job for granted. While you are working make sure you do it by the book or their will be repercussions."

HR (Former Employee) says

"Very difficult culture to understand and hard to fit in to . place where everyone knows each other and very hard to fit in, learn the job, and concentrate at work."

Senior Associate Entomologist (Current Employee) says

"SCJ likes to tout being a family company, but what that really means is that the Johnson family is only beholden to itself. The culture appears relaxed but it's really more confused. Meeting rarely conclude with anything else than another meeting. It's a revolving door of employees. The benefits are greatNo clear job role, management that don't understand what projects they assign"

Senior Technician (Former Employee) says

"I worked for this company for 14 yrs they micro manage every thing and have unqualified people in management positions. There is a very clear seperation from day staff and shift workers. They do not value there employees and use fear as a motivating tool. The wages are great but that is the only part left of this once great place to work. I would not recommend working here keep looking.good pay, some good employeesmicro maneged with unqualified people, no work life balance, prejudice between day staff and shift workers, ect."

Dennis says

"Bought a patio cleaner of theirs which did absolutely nothing. Contacted them with my concerns and they replied to me saying they would provide me a replacement that was assured would work, great service i thought. Two weeks ongoing now and no replacement provided even after numerous attempts to contact them. I feel lied to, angry and ripped off to be honest. A ' family company' 'we make products to improve lives' yet all I've had is upset and my pocket emptied."
